Phyllis Jean Root Norman

Phyllis Jean Root Norman of Ithaca, NY passed away Friday, July 9, 2021 at Oak Hill Manor. Phyllis was born on April 24, 1929 in Ithaca, the only child of Clyde and Winifred Robinson Root. As she reminded us many times, she weighed 2 lbs at birth and had Last Rights five times.

She graduated from Immaculate Conception School and Ithaca High School, which is currently the DeWitt Building. Phyllis worked at the Telephone Company before taking a position with the Ithaca City School District as a library clerk at the Columbia Annex. They later moved to Northeast School and DeWitt Middle School from which Phyllis retired after 23 years. Phyllis met her future husband, David ‘Jabber’ Norman and was married for 66 years before his death in May 2015. She is survived by her two children, Lynda (David) Huckle of Ithaca, NY and David C. Norman of Los Angeles, CA. Phyllis is also survived by her five grandchildren – Brett (Erin) Huckle of Wallingford, CT ; Ashley (Robert) Case of Lansing, NY ; Kyle Huckle of Wallingford, CT ; Jamisyn (Caleb Cummins) Huckle of Port Townsend, WA and David Norman, Jr. of Los Angeles, CA. As well as 6 great grandchildren – Jack and Alexa Huckle of Wallingford, CT ; Chloe, Connor and Cameron Case of Lansing, NY and Maverick Huckle of Wallingford, CT.

Phyllis loved entertaining and cooking, especially Syrian food. She also loved traveling and especially spending winters with her Florida friends. She was always full of life and loved doing anything new and exciting. The family would like to thank Joan Coskey, a lifelong friend, Donna Schaad Donnelly, Walden Place Memory Care and Oak Hill Manor for their wonderful care. Additionally the family is thankful for all the South Hill neighbors who helped watch over her in her later years.

In keeping with Phyllis’ wishes the burial will be private. There will be a Celebration of Life at a later date. Bangs Funeral Home is assisting with arrangements
