Elsie U. Burns

August 23, 1926 — December 18, 2020

Elsie Burns died on December 18, 2020 at Hospicare . She was born in Newfield NY, the 6th child of Budd and Urania Taber White. Elsie’s husband, Horace P. Burns, USN of Marietta, Mississippi died as a result of a car accident Jan 15, 1970. Besides her parents and husband, she was predeceased by her siblings Laura (Kenneth) McGuire, Ruth (Paul) Tremblay, Paul (Virginia) White, Warren (Annie) White, George (Mary) White; Her nephews Harry(Skip), Richard and James White, Charles Murphy, Thomas McGuire and her niece Anne Akers. Elsie was predeceased by her close companions and travel buddies her sister- in -law Ginny White and her brother- in law Paul Tremblay.

She is survived by her nieces Bessie McGuire, Kathleen Smith, Susan Murphy, Joann Hulford, Monna Lorer, Marianne Smeltzer and nephew Jon Lorer. Surviving cousins include Rebecca Helms of Salt Lake City and Abbie Reaves of New Mexico.

Elsie attended the one room schoolhouse in Trumbulls Corner for seven years. She graduated from Newfield Central school in 1943 and was the class Valedictorian. She attended Hartwick College in Oneonta NY and joined the U.S. Cadet Nurses Corp in 1944. Elsie married Horace Burns on June 8th 1947 at the Trumbulls Corner church in Newfield NY. During her husband's 21 years of service in the United States Navy she and her husband made their home in a variety of places including: Norfolk Virginia, Canal Zone Panama, Guantanamo Cuba, Washington DC , San Leandro California and Pearl Harbor Hawaii. During Horace’s tours of duty Elsie worked as a Licensed Practical Nurse. Upon her husband's retirement from the Navy the couple returned to Newfield NY. Elsie then began to work at Mc guire Gardens and retired after 29 years.

She loved to travel and visited 50 states, most of the Canadian provinces as well as South America and Central American, the Caribbean Islands, Spain, North Africa and Japan. She was an avid hiker, fisherwoman, and hunter. She was a long time member of the Cayuga Trails Club. She loved to garden and raised orchids. She loved animals and always had cats and/or dogs and at one time a pet skunk, She was a long time member of the Eagles Auxiliary 1253, American Orchid Society and Trumbulls Corner Community Church. After she retired from McGuire Gardens she volunteered at Longview.

Elsies loved the outdoors and up to her 92nd birthday went on Canadian fishing trips with her family. She loved baseball (Boston Red Sox) and basketball and could be found watching her great great niece Angeline McComb play ball all thru her high school years. Even at age 92 she watched Angeline play at Cass Park coed softball teams. She never forgot her families birthdays. You can always expect a birthday card from her. She was able to meet her great great great niece Nyia before passing .

At age 92 she had to adjust to selling her home and moving to assisted living. Her great nephews Stephen and Randolph Brown, great niece Diana McComb, niece Monna Lorer and niece Kathy White were instrumental in helping her with this transition. She made the most of it and was active in the extracurricular activities Longview and later Brookdale had to offer. Brookdale and Longview gave her excellent care.

Memorial services will be held on Saturday, September 04, 2021 at 11:30 am at the Trumbulls Corners Community Church with Pastor Dale Ford officiating.. Burial was held at the Long Island National Cemetery arranged by Bangs Funeral Home. In lieu of flowers, please direct donations to the Tompkins County SPCA or the Trumbulls Corner Community Church, Newfield NY. The family appreciates the support she received the last few years from Brookdale, Longview and the last week of her life at Cayuga Medical Center and Hospicare.
