Donato (Dan) Signore

Brooktondale - Donato “Dan” Signore age 98, passed away peacefully at home in the presence of family on Friday, August 27, 2021.

Born on October 14, 1922 in Chicago, IL, Dan was the son of Italian immigrants from the village of Ripacondida, Giuseppe and Maria (Faretta) Signore.

Dan was a World War II veteran serving in the Pacific Theatre with the 43rd Infantry Division. Dan received the Asiatic Pacific Theatre Ribbon with 2 Bronze Stars & Bronze Arrowhead, Philippine Liberation Ribbon with 1 Bronze Star, Combat Infantry Badge, Good Conduct Medal and WW II Victory Medal.

Dan was employed at Cornell University Department of Buildings and Properties, Design Division, until his retirement. After retirement he worked and consulted for local architectural firms.

During the 1990’s he opened Signore Winery, a small commercial winery on the family property. He made and sold award winning wines. As a boy he had learned winemaking form his father. He also visited a winery in Tuscany to hone his skills.

Dan was predeceased by his parents, sister, Hilda DiOrio; brothers, Anthony, William, Michael and Joseph. Dan is survived by his wife, Ann (Westbrook) Signore; sons, Mark (Nancy Cheng) of Taiwan and Pete of Brooktondale; one grandson, Daniel Signore; 4 great grandchildren, Nanichi, Anthony, Naomi and Lorenzo. Dan is also survived by 19 nieces and nephews. His co-worker and dear friend of many years, and caregiver, Pamela Kingsbury should be remembered as well.

Dan was attended at the last by Fr. Chumo of Immaculate Conception Church, Ithaca, NY.

Aside from a Mass in his memory at Immaculate Conception Church, no services are planned locally. As Dan wished, he will be buried in a family plot at Mt. Carmel Cemetery, Chicago, IL. Donations in Dan’s memory may be directed to Immaculate Conception Church, Ithaca, NY. Bangs Funeral Home is assisting the family.
