Thomas Leroy McGuire died Wednesday February 21, 2018. Born September 7, 1933 to Ken and Laura McGuire in Newfield, New York, growing up during the depression with his sisters, Bessie, Teen and Anne along with a large extended family in Trumbulls Corners.
Tom met his future wife, Mary Daiziel Docherty in 1953 while stationed at Kirknewton Air Force Base, Scotland.
They married December 11, 1954. Tom and Mary's daughter Brenda was also born in Edinburgh. Mary and Tom moved back to Ithaca New York, and Tom continued working at the family business, McGuire Gardens. Soon after graduating from Cornell University in 1960, daughter, Karen was born.
In 1965, Tom was personally hired by C.E.O. Alonso Decker Jr. (also a Cornell Alumnus) of Black and Decker, Hempsted, Maryland, accepting a position as managing Landscape Design Engineer; Tom and Al Decker became good friends. Tom designed Al Decker's 605 Acre farm, Money Point on the Sassafrass River. Tom, Mary, Brenda and Karen all made life-long friends and memories while living in Owings Mills, Maryland.
After the family returned to Ithaca in 1971, Tom was very active in the Newfield Lions Club, receiving Lion of the Year, a Past President Award and was also charter member.
Tom leaves behind his daughters, Brenda (Bill Hoose), Karen (Jerry) Van Etten, grandsons, Weston H. McGuire and Scott M. Van Etten. Sisters, Bessie McGuire, Teen (Don) Smith and Anne Akers. Tom additionally, leaves behind many friends, cousins, aunts, nieces and nephews.
Calling hours will be at Bangs Funeral Home, Saturday, February 24,2018 from 11:00 a.m. to 1 p.m. Funeral service to immediately follow with Pastor Mike Kelly presiding.
Donations will be kindly accepted by the Newfield Lions Club P.O Box 44, Newfield NY; Hospice 172 E. King Rd. Ithaca or the Tompkins County SPCA
