Thomas A. Mccarrick

Thomas A. McCarrick, age 67, of Ithaca, NY passed away from brain cancer at home on Tuesday, October 4, 2016.

He was born and raised in Elmira, NY by his late parents Thomas J. and Daurene McCarrick. He was a long term Fall Creek resident where he lived with his wife of 45 years, Janice (Nelson) McCarrick and where they raised their two children, Gretchen (Sunny) Kundra of Virginia Beach, VA and Kevin McCarrick of Ithaca. They also have two wonderful granddaughters, Madelyn and Megan Kundra.

Tom enjoyed time spent with family and friends, biking, cross-country skiing, playing bridge and other card and board games and reading a good novel with a cup of coffee and a cat curled up on his lap. He was always interested in current and historical events and had an active inquiring mind about most any topic. His favorite hobby, however, was his job of almost 30 years teaching advanced chemistry labs at Cornell University. He took great pleasure in making chemistry experiments fun and relevant for the students, and inspired a generation of undergraduate and graduate students to become educators or to find an alternative they could be more passionate about. He retired in 2009, just in time for a wonderful trip to India with most of his family.


In lieu of flowers, the family asks those who would like to make a contribution in Tom's memory to kindly consider the Ithaca Sciencenter where he volunteered his time. Friends are invited to stop in for an informal visitation at the Ithaca Sciencenter, located at 601 1st St, on Wednesday, October 12, 2016 anytime from 5pm until 7 pm.
