Stefen J. Szymanski of McGraw House Ithaca, formerly of Jacksonville, N.Y, died December 26, at Cayuga Medical Center. The youngest of six children, Stefen was born in Ithaca on April 15, 1928 to the late Stefan and Monica Szymanski. He was predeceased by his brothers Edward and Stanley and his sisters Violet, Sophie Jenny, and his wife of 54 years, Rose in 2003.
Following graduation from Newfield High School in 1946, Stefen enlisted in the Marine Corps and served in China and Guam. After returning home from the military, Stefen married Rose Cardonia in 1950 and was employed by Babcock Industries. Following his fifteen years at Babcock Industries, Stefen was employed until his retirement in 1990, at the New York State Veterinary College at Cornell. Stefen was a member of Immaculate Conception Church,and a life long member of the Fraternal Order of the Eagles. He spent many of his retirement hours helping others by volunteering at Loaves and Fishes, providing transportation for doctor appointments and visiting patients at local nursing homes. His passion was flower gardening and the grounds of McGraw House were abundant with his beautiful creations.
He is survived by his nephews Ed Szymanski of Ithaca, Richard Ross of Interlaken, Donald Moon of Ithaca, Ronald Holster of Florida and nieces Karen Burlew of Berkshire, Irene Schickel of Tennessee, and Carol Ross of Waterloo. Also surviving is a brother in law, Richard Ross Sr. of Interlaken and a dear friend Irene Hunter of Ithaca.
Prayer services will be held on Tuesday January 2, 2018 at Bangs Funeral Home with Fr. Augustine Chumo officiating. Friends may call from 10:00 to 11:00 prior to the service.
