Sherry Crissey Canzonetti was born May 10, 1961, and died October 3, 2024, after a long illness at the age of 63.
Sherry was employed at Cornell University for 38 years, retiring in March 2024. She began as a Cashier in the Campus Dining Department, working her way up to an Account Representative position, where she was responsible for making sure that people got paid on time. She loved her job and made many, many lifelong friends there.
Sherry was known for her thoughtfulness and kindness, taking her role as the “big sister” very seriously. She was more concerned with comforting everyone around her than worrying about herself. Even as she bravely fought cancer, she shielded her family from the unpleasant side effects of the treatment, because she didn’t want to upset or worry them.
She called virtually everyone she ever knew in any capacity to sing “Happy Birthday” to them and spend a few minutes talking to them. It didn’t matter whether it was an elderly aunt, a friend she knew from work, or a grandchild, she would take the time to acknowledge their special day and make them feel loved.
Sherry was really looking forward to spending more time with her beloved husband, Christopher Canzonetti, and improving the new house they just bought.
When she wasn’t working, calling family, friends and acquaintances to wish them a happy birthday, getting together with her core group of high school friends, or spending time with her husband, Sherry was creative and enjoyed working on craft projects. She could crochet and would make blankets and baby clothes for friends. She made clothes for her niece and granddaughters’ Barbie dolls. She made doll furniture for them out of plastic canvas. Recently she began making diamond painting crafts, and gave gifts of Christmas ornaments, suncatchers, mirror compacts and coasters to her friends and family.
Sherry was sweet and loving most of the time, but she could be feisty if she needed to be! She was only 5’ tall, but brave and tough, especially if you tried to mess with anyone she cared about. She didn’t care how big you thought you were; she wasn’t going to allow anyone to hurt her family.
Her father called her “Miss Giggly,” and that’s because she giggled all the time. She giggled because she was a happy, positive person; she giggled when she was nervous, and she giggled when she was stressed.
Sherry is survived by her husband and love of her life, Christopher Canzonetti, her parents, Bill and Gloria Crissey, her sister Tammy (Anthony) Tyree, her brother John (Julia) Crissey, her sister Marisa Crissey, her children Renate Ussery and Alexander Ussery, grandchildren Kahlyn (Ryan) Crane, Brianna Ussery, Alexander Ussery, Jr., Evan Ussery, Wesley Ussery, Keegan Ussery and Ayla Ussery, nephews Brandon Haight and Cameron Haight, niece Brittany Haight, aunts Devora Rose McMurray and Deanna Rose, along with many cousins.
A Memorial service will be held on Saturday, October, 12th at 11am in Bangs Funeral Home.
