Ruth J. Chisholm

June 15, 1930 — March 12, 2017

Chisholm, Ruth J. Ruth J. Chisholm of Ithaca, New York passed away unexpectedly at Cayuga Medical Center on Sunday, March 12, 2017 with her twin daughters by her side. She was 86. Ruth was born June 15, 1930, Long Island, New York. She was predeceased by her parents, John Leonard and Sophia Charlotte Joslin. Ruth relocated to Ithaca, New York four years ago to be closer to family, residing at the McGraw House.

Ruth was the beloved wife of Gordon F. Chisholm who predeceased her. They enjoyed 20 wonderful years of retirement in North Carolina. While Gordie spent time on the golf course, Ruth began working again as a medical office manager for Hospice. Her warmth and organizational skills were admired by her colleagues and the many families Hospice served. Before retiring, she was employed by Cornell University both at the Law School and the Department of Microbiology. She had a soft spot for students, assisting them in any way should could.

Ruth was a kind, generous and thoughtful person with a great sense of humor. She was a devoted mom who loved spending time with her family. Her mother passed away shortly after her birth. At the age of 3, she and her older sister were placed in the Odd Fellows Orphanage in Ithaca, New York. She has many fond memories of growing up there. As the youngest orphan, she was spoiled by all. She never felt disadvantaged and with her positive outlook on life, she always saw the glass as half full. Ruth was a wonderful cook and loved to bake. She made her own delicious creations through the many cookbooks she loved to read. Everyone who knew her remembers her fondness for sweets.

Ruth is survived by her four children, her son David Shaw (Mary Lynn) of East Aurora, NY; her twin daughters, Dorie Haring (John Wells) and Deborah Eastman of Ithaca, NY; and her daughter Dixie Emond (Don) of Boxborough, MA. She was the beloved Nana to Kerry Penska (Tom), Drew Shaw (Laura), Kelly Chaffee (Derek), Jody Haring, Matthew Eastman, Kristi Eastman, Max Emond and Rachael Emond. Ruth was Great-Nana to Connor Chaffee and Payton Shaw. She is also survived by her niece, Miriam Roberts Venti (Mike) and nephews Mark Roberts and James Roberts (Mary). Before Ruth was even born, she was predeceased by a brother, John Leonard, who died at the age of 9. Ruth is predeceased by her sister, Dorothy Roberts and her husband, Edward Roberts. She is also predeceased by her first husband, Harold J. Shaw.

The family would like to thank all of the medical professionals and emergency personnel who have assisted in Ruth's compassionate care. She was truly appreciative. She had a smile for everyone, whether it be a visit to the doctor's office, a trip to Wegman's or passing one of her neighbors at McGraw.
