Ruth R. Cain

Ruth R. Cain, 83, passed away Thursday, September 24, 2015 at the Cayuga Medical Center. She was born in Buffalo, NY daughter of the late Matthew and Rose Schroeder Hubbard.

Ruth spent her childhood in an orphanage, and would often tell stories of her time there. She grew into a strong-willed, independent woman with a big generous heart and fun loving sense of humor. She enjoyed camping with her boys when they were young, many trips to Disney World, and visiting the Amish country. Ruth had many creative talents including sewing, knitting, crafts and baking. Above all was her strong faith and love of God and family.


Ruth retired as merchandise manager at the Cornell Book Store where she had worked for over 16 years. She had previously worked at Triangle Book Store. Ruth was a founding member of Christ Chapel and instrumental in implementing the installation of the kitchen, where she organized many Church functions.


Ruth is survived by her husband, Herb Gable of Ithaca; her sons, David (Jill) Cain of Charlottesville, VA, Michael (Patricia) Cain of Sarasota, FL, Matthew Cain of Ithaca, Leo (Katherine) Cain, Jr. of Simsbury, CT, Mark (Vanessa Protts) Cain of Newfield, Kevin (Kathy Cole) Cain of Largo, FL and Joseph Cain of Ithaca. She is also survived by 12 grandchildren, several great grandchildren and several nieces and nephews as well as Herb's daughter Tammy (Dennis) Bishop. In addition to her parents, Ruth was also predeceased by her first husband, Leo C. Cain; her grandchildren, Michael Jason Cain and Khrista Cain Harbaugh; her sisters, Loretta Knapp and Florence Dahlke, and a bother Raymond Hubbard.

A celebration of Ruth's life will be held at Christ Chapel on October 10, 2015 at 11:00 am. In lieu of flowers, donations in Ruth's memory may be made to Christ Chapel, 160 Graham Rd., Ithaca, NY 14850. Arrangements are by the Bangs Funeral Home.
