Rose Strebel was born in New York City to Rosa Cisneros and Jose Raul Gomez on March 20, 1927. She was an adventurous child, constantly getting into mischief. From innocently playing games in city streets to jumping between the rooftops of Manhattan, her escapades never disappointed. After losing her father as a young girl, Rose was raised by her mother. They faced many challenges and built a life together based on love and support. Rose felt lucky to have her cousin Carmen and her sister Olga by her side. As a young woman, Rose worked as an executive secretary on Wall Street. She thrived in the vibrant energy of Manhattan and regularly went out to the cinema to catch the latest movie or to the theatre to enjoy a play or musical. Rose loved to go out dancing with her girlfriends and always went prepared knowing the latest trends and steps. She had no idea that her future husband, Oscar, would eventually ask her for a dance and the rest would be history.
With the passing of her mother, Rose entered a new chapter of her life. She married Oscar Strebel on April 27, 1957 at St. Patrick’s Cathedral and after moving to Long Island where she continued to raise her sister, had two sons, Paul and Chris. They enjoyed life in North Massapequa until she followed her children to Ithaca, post-retirement. Rose enjoyed her later years spending time with her family in the comfort of the lovely home she created. She was known for her sense of humor, sweet disposition and endless patience, bestowed particularly toward her grandchildren. She delighted in their many accomplishments and enjoyed their frequent visits. She made a mean Hoppin’ John and always had chocolate and small candies on hand for treats any time of the day or night.
Rose passed away peacefully in her home surrounded by her loving family. She is pre-deceased by her sister, Olga Morris and her grandson, Lee Strebel. Rose is survived by her husband, Oscar, her son Paul and his wife Leslie and her son Chris and his wife Janet as well as her grandchildren Debra, Sarah and Jennifer. She will be deeply missed by her cousin, Carmen Simonelli, who was like a sister to her. Rose’s many nieces, nephews and their spouses and children will miss “Aunt Ta.” The family would like to thank Dr. Jander, Fay Bunnell and Sarah Lee Prentice for their loving care and kindness.
