Rose Steidl, 95, died peacefully on Saturday, December 10, 2016 in Jacksonville, New York.
Born and raised in Paris, Illinois, she received her undergraduate degree from St. Mary-of-the-
Woods College, Indiana and earned her master's degree and Ph.D. from Cornell University
with a focus on home management and family economics. In 1980, she retired from Cornell
University with the title of Professor Emeritus.
While at Cornell, she was instrumental in developing the Department of Design and
Environmental Analysis when the College of Home Economics evolved into the College of
Human Ecology. She served as the Department's chairperson from 1975 to 1979. While at
Cornell, she co-authored the college textbook Work in the Home which became the major
reference nationally and internationally for students studying the management of human
resources through the design of work and workplaces. The book was also used by
manufacturers of household equipment, kitchen designers, and professionals working with
people with physical limitations. The book was also translated into Japanese.
For many years, she was an active parishioner of St. Catherine of Siena Church, Ithaca. Her
interests included genealogy, traveling, and nature. She was especially fond of the Cornell
Botanic Gardens and the Cornell Lab of Ornithology.
She was preceded in death by parents Dominic and Viola Rose Steidl; two brothers Raymond
and Charles; two sisters Virginia and Mary Ida (Riedell). She is survived by one sister, Sister
Martha; two brothers, Frank and Walter; and many nieces and nephews. Her family will miss
her kindness, generous spirit, and sense of humor.
Her family would like to thank the kind staff at The Evergreen House, Jacksonville, who, for
many years, provided her with compassionate care to become a loving, supportive second
family.
Should anyone desire the family suggests memorial donations be made to a favorite charity of
one's choice.
A private burial and graveside service will be held in the Spring.
