Anderson, Ronald Eugene
Ithaca: Ronald Eugene Anderson passed away peacefully at home on
Sunday, May 5,2013 with his family at his side. Ron was born Sept.
15, 1920 to Ivar Hilding and Hanna Pearson Anderson, and grew up on
a farm in northeastern Nebraska. During WWII he was a navigator in
the Army Air. Corps. After the war he graduated from the University
of Nebraska, where he met and married Jean in 1948. Ron and Jean
moved to Madison, WI where he received his doctorate in plant
genetics from the University of Wisconsin. They moved to Ithaca in
1954 with their four children, where he joined the Cornell
University faculty. In 1988, he was elected as Professor Emeritus.
Ron was very active in the community serving the Cayuga Heights
Fire Department, county planning board, water commisssion, the
Athletic Council of Cornell, and as mayor of Cayuga Heights.
He is survived by his daughter Susan and husband Ron Serlin (grandson
Zane); son Scott (granddaughter Haley); daughter Carol
(grandchildern Jared, Jacob, Casey, and Lucas); and son Burr and
his wife Brenda (grandchildren Emily and Zachary). He is also
survived by his two sisters Carol Bard and Marilyn Wallin of
Nebraska.
A memorial service will be planned for a later date. In lieu of
flowers, donation can be made in Ron's name to Hospicare of
Tompkins county.
