ITHACA – Roger Howley, 93, of Ithaca, died on Tuesday, December 12, 2018. Born on November 28, 1925 in Ithaca, NY, he was the son of the late Patrick Francis and Alice Teresa (Hester) Howley.
In June of 1943, he graduated from Ithaca High School and entered the United State Navy. He honorably served his country during World War II as a combat air crewman.
After the war, Roger graduated from Cornell University with a Bachelor’s Degree in Arts and Sciences. He then began his career in book publishing with the Macmillan Company in New York. Roger’s talents did not go unnoticed, and he was quickly promoted the company’s editorial representative in London, a position he held for two years. He returned to the United States to become editor in chief of the Johns Hopkins Press in Baltimore, but the position was short lived as he accepted a call to become university publisher at Cornell University. He would go on to work at Cornell for 20 years until his retirement.
He is survived by his loving wife of 57 years, Leona Katherine (Punch) Howley of Ithaca.
Services will be private and at the convenience of the family. Services are under the direction of Bangs Funeral Home, 209 W. Green Street in Ithaca, NY.
Leona would like to extend a special thank you to Jane Hancock and the other aides that cared for Roger over the past six years.
