Robert F. Whitmarsh, age 99, formerly of Ithaca, went home to the Lord to join his precious wife, Ginny, on Wednesday, January 17, 2018.
Robert "Bob" Whitmarsh, grew up in Greene, NY the son of Floyd and Edith Gates Whitmarsh. Bob served in World War II as a Corporal in the Army. After his service, Bob went on to work as an electrical engineer, first at GE, and then at Cornell University until his retirement.
Bob is survived by his sister Ellen Quarella of Greene, NY and two sons Gary (Diane) Whitmarsh of Rochester NH, Robert Mark (Sherry) Whitmarsh of Kansas City, KS, seven grandchildren and five great-grandchildren. Bob is also survived by his special neighbor and close friend (and "sometimes nephew") Ron Krieg, and also neighbor Cyndy Baker both of Ithaca. Whether shoveling his sidewalk, mowing his lawn or bringing him vegetables from the garden, both Ron and Cyndy were special angels for Bob. He was predeceased by his wife Virginia Hillick Whitmarsh and his ten brothers.
Bob and Ginny's pride and joy was spending their summers at their cottage on Chaumont Bay, NY, where all of their family, friends, and neighbors often gathered. They were especially close to their neighbors Dave and Carol Siver. Bob and Ginny had a passion for bowling, ringing the bell at Salvation Army stations across the Ithaca area, and making fruit baskets, every holiday season, to share with family and friends. Bob's priority was always family, telling stories, and following The Mets and The Bills. Even though Bob spent many wonderful years in retirement, his hands stayed busy. He found endless creative ways to fix anything. He could apply the same talent from working on an atom smasher to building an addition on to the family cottage.
Finally, Bob can have his coffee as hot as he wants it in heaven.
Services will be held at Bangs Funeral Home in Ithaca, N.Y. on Tuesday, January 23, 2018. Calling hours are from 10 - 11am, with a memorial service to follow at 11am.
In Lieu of flowers, donations are encouraged to the NY State Veterans Home in Oxford, NY or the local Salvation Army.
