Robert F. Slaght

September 8, 1930 — March 9, 2018

SLAGHT, ROBERT FRANCIS
Born September 8, 1930 in Hector NY to Anna and Francis Slaght, passed away Friday, March 9, 2018 in Ithaca, NY. Robert was a cherished and amazing man who knew how to fix just about anything, to build just about anything, and whose sole purpose in life was to care for his family, to usher faithfully during services at the Immaculate Conception Church, to answer the call of the fire department as a volunteer and to give an honest day's work.
Bob graduated from Ithaca High School and then served his country in the Army in Korea.
As a very young volunteer fireman he chased sirens and helped to fight fires. He also worked with the fire department during the years of urban renewal when buildings on Floral Avenue were destroyed through controlled burns. He was a plumber first and foremost but also worked with his uncle in his oil business, and finally worked in the automotive industry as courtesy van driver, parts driver, and general repair person. He started at Zikakis Chevrolet and worked through the transition years to the current dealership's import location. He was proud to have served each of the owners of the dealerships. Bob always spoke of the important people he met while driving the courtesy van and always remarked how well he was treated during the drive and when they met socially.
Bob was predeceased by his mother and father, Anna and Francis Slaght, infant daughter Marianne and several aunts and uncles. He is survived by his daughter Margaret Slaght, son John Slaght, Sister Elizabeth (Betty) Teeter, long-time partner Donna Carr; several nieces and nephews.
Special thanks to the amazing caregivers at Oak Hill Manor for their wonderful care.
