Robert M. "Bob"Nka Sr

October 26, 1923 — November 1, 2017

Robert Srnka passed away peacefully on Wednesday, November 01, 2017 at 94 years of age. He was predeceased by his parents, Joseph and Mary Srnka; brothers, Charles and Joseph, both of Ithaca; sisters, Helen Bierce of Ithaca and Rose Potter of Midlothian, VA. He was also predeceased by Vera Bond of Interlaken, his sweetheart and longtime companion of over 40 years. Together they enjoyed traveling extensively throughout the world.

Bob is survived by several nieces and nephews and by Jeffrey Bond and family.

Bob was engaged in several enterprises throughout his life. Most notable were owning auto parts stores in both Ithaca and Elmira. He had been a member of the Immaculate Conception Church and was a life member of the Ithaca Elks #636.

Bob served his country during World War II as a pilot in the United States Army Air Corps. In 2002, at the age of 79 he entered the USA Air Combat Contest in Las Vegas, flying fighter training planes. After flying combatants on a one-on-one basis in aerial acrobatic flying, he won the Top Gun Challenge, setting a new standard for dog fighting. He was awarded the Combat Ace Top Gun.

Bob will be truly missed by all.

A memorial service will be held on Saturday, December 2, 2017 at 11 am at the Bangs Funeral Home. Friends may call prior to the service beginning at 10 am. Bob will be laid to rest with military honors at the Calvary Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, please consider contributions to the SPCA, 1640 Hanshaw Rd., Ithaca, NY 14850 or to Catholic Charities of Tompkins County, 324 W. Buffalo St., Ithaca, NY 14850.
