Richard E. Hughes

Richard E. Hughes, Jr., age 77, died on April 27, 2024 at the Beechtree Center for Rehabilitation
and Nursing in Ithaca. “Dick” (or “Rick” or “Ted” as he was variously known) was born in
Albany, NY on April 2, 1947. He was the son of Richard E. Hughes and Hazel Wetmore
Hughes, late of Ithaca. Dick is survived by his cousins, Thomas Stratton of Constableville, New
York, Patricia Martin of Beverly, Massachusetts, and Douglas Albern, of McLean, New York.
Dick was known and loved by many over his years of service to the Episcopal Church at Cornell
(ECC). As he said shortly before his death, “My life was ECC.” ECC members past and present,
as well as members of St. John’s Episcopal Church in Ithaca and other friends, were treated to
his stories about ECC history, disquisitions about music, and his love for the Welsh language,
which he diligently studied. A funeral service for Dick will be held at the chapel in Anabel
Taylor Hall on the Cornell Campus on Saturday, May 11, 2024 at 1:00 p.m. (Parking in the lots
behind Anabel and Myron Taylor Halls is free on the weekend.) A private burial will follow on
Monday, May 13 at Pleasant Grove Cemetery, where Dick will be interred next to his parents. In
lieu of flowers, donations in Dick’s memory should be directed to the Episcopal Church at
Cornell, P.O. Box 7251, Ithaca, NY 14851.
