Richard Classen

June 19, 1933 — May 12, 2014

Classen, Morton Richard "Dick"
Newfield, NY: May 12, 2014 at the age of 80. Dick Classen passed away peacefully surrounded by his family at Upstate Medical Center in Syracuse. A Korean War veteran, Dick was born on June 19, 1933 in Ithaca, New York. Referred to by many as a "true American," he served his country and his community. An Eagle Scout and private pilot at one time, he later became the leader of Scout Troop 25. But most of all Dick was a fiercely devoted family man and a life-long home builder. He built many homes in the Ithaca area and in Texas, where as a commercial builder he restored the historic Melrose Hotel in Dallas. He is survived by his loving wife of 59 years, Jane Freeman Classen. Together they made their home, including Snooty Fox Antiques, into a welcoming place to many. His quick wit and love of a good story stayed with him to the end. Predeceased by his parents Fritz and Pauline Classen and his brother David (Judy) of Sedona, Arizona, he is survived by his brother Alan (Chris) of Raleigh, North Carolina, and six children: Mary Thompson and Patricia Classen of Newfield, NY; Thomas (Cindy) of Horseshoe Bay, Texas; Katherine (Thomas) Exter of Honeoye Falls, NY; Steven (Marisa) of Austin, TX; and Elizabeth (Lee) Ambrose of Ithaca, NY. Grandchildren: Christy and Michele Peter, Dillon and Weston Classen, Justine and John Santana, Mitchell and Miles Classen, Freeman and Jane Ambrose. Step-grandchildren: Trevor and Bronwen Exter, and Eric Ambrose. Great grandchildren: Wyatt Quinn, Mianna Herson, Elijah and Malik Blas, and Reina Marie Gonzalez Santana. Dick is also survived by five beloved nephews (remarkably, no nieces) and many friends. Calling hours for family and friends were held at Bangs Funeral Home on May 16.
