Rene Leon Aguilar

Rene Leon Aguilar, 81, a veteran of the United States Air Force, passed away on Monday, November 23, 2020 at the Birmingham VA Medical Center with his daughter by his side. Rene was born on January 9, 1939 in Ithaca, NY and was preceded in death by his parents, Domingo Aguilar and Lucy Aguilar, and his brother Lt. Colonel D.I. Aguilar. After his passing, he welcomed into heaven his sisters, Virginia (George) Fields and Carmen (Dale) Brewer, and brother-in-law, Robert L. Boothroyd.

He was a veteran of the U.S. Air Force serving six years. Rene followed his passion for figure skating and worked for many years in the roller-skating industry.  It was there that he developed a love for teaching and coaching both figure and speed skating and he coached several regional and national champions. Growing up in Ithaca and Cayuga Lake, he developed a love for boating and being on the water. Upon retirement, he spent the remainder of his time at Smith Lake in Cullman, Alabama where he watched many sunsets with his best view of the lake.

Rene is survived by his daughters, Katrina (Brian) Smith and Roxane (Jeffrey) Roberts; granddaughters, Brooke (Patrick) Ratchford, Hannah (Curtis) Russell and Elizabeth Roberts; six great-grandchildren, Braxton and Ryder Wilson, Rilyn Russell, and EJ, Claire and Harper Ratchford; as well as sisters, Rita Boothroyd, Lisa Rynes, and Tina (Daniel) Matychak.

A burial will be held at Calvary Cemetery, 636 5 Mile Drive, Ithaca, NY on Wednesday, July 5, 2023 at 12:00pm.
