Penelope “Penny” Anne (Moss) Ciccone, age 69, of Brooktondale, NY passed away Thursday,
October 17, 2024 at the Hospicare Residence in Ithaca after a two-year battle with ALS.
Penny was born in Buxted, East Sussex, England on June 22, 1955, and lived much of her
childhood in Ontario, Canada. These early years abroad fostered a close bond with her parents
and two siblings and laid the foundation for her love of adventure and the outdoors. She met
her husband, Charlie, at Ithaca College and then settled in the Ithaca area where they raised
their two children, Kate and Alex. Penny passed on her appreciation of the outdoors to her kids
through running, camping, and skiing among other things and imparted on them the
importance of caring for the natural world. Professionally, Penny was a computer programmer
at Cornell University for over 30 years, where she was known by her colleagues for being an
eager problem solver and devoted team member. She found joy in giving back to the
community she loved and could be seen volunteering at church, organizing her son’s Boy Scout
troop, or helping maintain hiking trails. After Penny’s first of five grandchildren was born, she
became known as “Pippi” and retired from her career to be a bigger part of their lives. Penny
cherished her time with family and friends, and her warmth, energy and playful spirit will be
missed by those who knew her well.
Penny was preceded in death by her father, Charles Timothy Moss and her mother, Elizabeth
Anne Alderton. She is survived by her husband, Charles; daughter, Kate Ciccone (Trevor)
McKee; son, Alexander (Lindsay Prosser) Ciccone; sister, Sarah Moss Kaiser; brother, Charles
Roger Moss; five grandchildren, Rosemary, Cora, Ellis, Luke, and Ryan; nieces, nephews and
other extended family members.
A memorial service will be held at 11:00 am on Saturday, November 9, 2024, at St. John’s
Episcopal Church, 210 N Cayuga Street, Ithaca, NY. A private burial will follow at Brookton
Cemetery in Brooktondale, NY. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in Penny’s name to
