Nancy Goldstone Gersh, 79, a long-time Ithaca resident, passed away Thursday June 3, 2021, after a stroke.
She loved life, children, family, and nature in all its wonder.
Born in Rome, New York, on August 30, 1941, Nancy attended Rome Free Academy, received her BA from Cornell University in 1963, and soon after married her college sweetheart, David Gersh. She embarked upon a rich career guiding the lives of young people as an English teacher and guidance counselor at Ithaca High School, Lansing High School, and Lehman Alternative Community School in Ithaca.
Her colleagues at LACS wrote "So many lives were enriched by her special way: a person who laughed a lot and invariably told it like it is, with kindness, caring and loving. Untold numbers of people of all ages were supported and enriched by her straightforward, honest way of listening and guiding. Nancy offered a compassionate, listening ear, and often a light touch of humor, and al
ways a warm smile and laugh. She was a gift to all of us."
She is survived by her husband of 58 years, David Gersh; daughter Laura Gersh and husband, Randy Hubard; son Andrew Gersh and wife Heather Gersh and her treasured grandchildren, Miles Gersh and Alexandra Gersh; brother Murray Goldstone, brother Peter Goldstone and wife Sylvia Goldstone; sister-in-law Ellen Gersh Widess and husband Rick Warren; numerous loving cousins, nieces and nephews, and countless devoted friends.
The family will gather for a private funeral service. All are invited to a Celebration of Nancy's Life at Taughannock State Park, North Point Pavilion, on Monday, July 5, 2021 at 5:30 pm. Please feel free to bring a favorite dish.
The family thanks the nurses and doctors at Strong Memorial Hospital, Rochester, for their comforting care to Nancy and her family.
