Mildred J. Carmean (McKeen), age 90, passed away on April 21, 2024 at Hildebrandt Hospice Center in Greece, NY. She is survived by her four children: Richard, June (Eichas), Nancy (Merrick) and Thomas. She is also survived by her seven grandchildren: Krystral Eichas, Michelle Eichas, James Eichas, Chad Merrick, Nicholas Carmean, Ashley Carmean and Kailey Carmean as well as her four great-grandchildren Maximus Eichas, Alexander Eichas, River Sousa and Luca Carmean.
Mildred was born March 29, 1934 in Lyndhurst, NJ. to Albert and Alice McKeen. She also had one sister Gladys (Van Leuven) who passed in 2015. Mildred graduated high school from Lyndhurst HS in 1952. She then went on to enroll in Nursing at the Presbyterian Hospital School of Nursing in Newark, NJ. where she graduated in 1955 as a Registered Nurse. Mildred went on to marry Richard Carmean in 1956. They were happily married for 66 years, until Richard’s passing in May of 2022.
Following their wedding, Millie and Richard moved to Ithaca NY., where Richard attended Ithaca College. Ithaca, NY. was their home for the next 30 years. During these years Millie worked in various roles in health care and nursing throughout the Ithaca area and raised four children. Millie was also very involved with service to the Ithaca community; serving in many volunteer roles both in the local churches and in the general population. She was always so giving of her time to so many causes in the community. Millie was also an avid runner and for many years could be seen running the streets of Fall Creek.
Following their careers, Millie and Richard would follow their dreams to travel and serve. In 1997 they elected to enlist in the Peace Corps and, after a 12-week training course, they were assigned to a remote village in the Solomon Islands, where they served for two years. Following that adventure, they once again signed up to serve, this time in an orphanage in South Africa. Each of these experiences had made a lasting and profound impact on their lives.
Services will be held at East Lawn Cemetery in Ithaca, NY, Saturday, June 8th at 1:00pm.
