Max M. Weiss

August 25, 1920 — August 18, 2022

Ithaca

Max M. Weiss, formerly of Braidburn Way in Morristown, NJ, passed away peacefully on August 18, one week short of his 102nd birthday.  Born in what is now Romania, he emigrated to the United States when he was one and half years old.  He grew up in the Bronx, NY, and was the first in his immediate family to complete college, graduating from CCNY.

Max served in the Army Air Corps during WWII, working on the early development of radar.  After the war, he completed a master's degree at Columbia University, and then a PhD in physics at NYU.  He began work as a nuclear physicist at the newly established Brookhaven National Laboratory in Long Island.  He was soon recruited to Bell Laboratories in NJ, where he spent his entire career until retirement at age 70.  He ran a radiation safety group at Bell Labs and chaired the NJ Radiation Protection Commission.

Max married Estelle Derman in 1948 and they had two daughters, Michele and Marlene.  Estelle passed in 1987 and, in 1993, Max married Agnes Gordon.  They lived in retirement in Delray Beach, Florida.  Agnes died in 2012, and Max later moved to Ithaca, NY, near Marlene and her family.

Max was an avid traveler, raconteur, and reader in retirement, but most of all, he is remembered as a dedicated son, husband, father, father-in-law, grandfather, and great grandfather.  He is survived by his two daughters, Michele Korf and Marlene Barken, six grandchildren, and eight great grandchildren.  Max was buried with full military honors, and put to rest beside Estelle.  He had a long, full life and leaves behind only good memories.

Funeral arrangements have been entrusted to Bangs Funeral Home, Ithaca, NY. Online condolences may be made to Max’s family at www.bangsfuneralhome.com
