Margaret “Margie” Rumsey

Margie Rumsey (95) of Ithaca, NY recently passed peacefully at Bridges Cornell Heights. Born on the farm, Margie learned quickly from her parents the love of work, family and community. After graduating from Ithaca High School, Margie graduated from Cornell University’s College of Agriculture where she was associated with the Kappa Kappa Gamma Sorority. She married her high school sweetheart in Cornell’s Sage Chapel.

Margie was a force of nature; she loved living. She traveled widely with enthusiasm and curiosity, but she loved returning home to her family and Ithaca even more. She had an adventurous spirit enjoying everything from helming a sailboat to piloting a plane. Margie was active in local politics, volunteered to help start the first co-operative grocery store in Ithaca, and was involved in the Women’s Community Center, the Chamber of Commerce, the Ithaca Board of Realtors and the early Bed & Breakfast Association as one of the first B&B operators in the Ithaca area. She rejuvenated her guests with her hospitality while sharing the secrets of her beloved Ithaca. Margie was an involved member of the Unitarian Church for many years, and later joined the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints.

Margie was predeceased by her husband, Ed, her sisters, Marian and Elinor, and her daughter-in-law, Marj. Margie is survived by her three sons, her six grandchildren, her three step-grandchildren, and her 15 great-grandchildren. Margie’s vivacious, generous, and warm-hearted personality are deeply missed by her family, neighbors and those who know and love her.

A calling hour will be held at 1:00 pm immediately before funeral services at 2:00 pm on Thursday, June 3, 2021 at Bangs Funeral Home, 209 West Green St., Ithaca, NY (social distancing and mask protocols observed).
