Boynton, Margaret Cox
Born to John Cox and Rose Hanifin Cox in Binghamton, 1925, passed away August 22, 2012. Sister of Binghamton Fire Chief, John F. Cox (Mary); Lt. Col. Joseph Cox, EE (Sophie); Dr. Edward Cox (Jacky); Catherine Crowe (Tom). Margaret worked for the editor of the Binghamton Press, for Security Mutual and in Pittsburgh for American Standard Corp. before being promoted to the company's headquarters In New York City as the Personnel Department Manager. While in the City she enjoyed horseback riding In Central Park, traveling in Europe and vacations in Vermont. She worked after hours as a New York City fashion model. Corporate life was rewarding but lacked a fulfillment she desired, so Margaret decided to earn her college degree. She graduated from Cortland in the college's first class to admit more mature women. While still an undergraduate she worked as Dean at a high-rise women's dorm. She earned two Masters Degrees; one from Cornell in Early Childhood Development and one from Geneseo in Special Education. She taught in primary and high schools in Dryden and Ithaca, electing to teach young, growing children rather than obtaining a doctorate. Ben and Margaret were married in 1972. She helped raise four step-children, Victoria, Rebecca, Ben and Elizabeth. Working together they all built an efficient small house on 28 acres of woods and gardens on Wilkins Road. Margaret loved horses, golf, swimming and skiing; she was a superb cook and hostess at dinners making delightful desserts. She loved art and music, especially opera. She was a regular attendee at Catholic Church services and a member of the Thomas Merton Society. She enjoyed the Yacht Club and Hangar Theater where she volunteered. After retirement she gave many hours to tutoring younger students who benefited from her warm insight and ability. A Mass of Christian burial will be held at St. Catherine of Siena Church at 10:30 AM on Wednesday, August 29.
