The daughter of the late Milly and Eddie Herman, Maren grew up in Lindenhurst, Long Island, with her older sister, Ilene. She met her soulmate, Bob, while they were both students at SUNY Albany. For 18 years, they lived in the Washington DC area, where Maren worked as database programmer for the National Science Foundation.
