Lyman E. Baker

September 5, 1936 — October 19, 2022

Ithaca

Who died?...I did at Clifton Springs Hospital on October 19, 2022 at the tender age of 86. Lyman was born the son of the late Carl S. Baker and Bethel Keynon Baker of Ithaca.

Lyman retired from the US Post Office as post carrier #9 after 33 years of service. He worked for Tompkins Community Bank as a courier after his retirement from the Post Office.

Lyman served his community as a volunteer Fireman/Fire Police since 1960. He was also a member of the Rescue Steamer & Chemical Company No. 2 Ithaca Fire Department, Fire Service Explorer Post 145 (Advisor), Ithaca Veteran Volunteer Fireman’s Association (Trustee), National Association of Letter Carriers, and Chairman of the Board of Fire Commissioners.

Lyman could be found outside working in the lawn or sitting on his swing, reading. He loved to do paint by numbers to give as gifts and display in his home. He loved chatting with friends and neighbors, he always had a smile to share and a story to tell. He loved taking long car rides on back roads and stopping for ice cream. He shared many a corny joke with his grandchildren.

In addition to his parents, he is predeceased by his wife of 60 years, Jean E. (Galt) Baker; infant son; brother, Carl E. Baker; and sister, Patricia MacDougal.

Lyman is survived by his son Bill Baker (Aimee); grandchildren, Caitlin Bement (Jessi), Samantha Baker, Alex Hurd (Drew), and Christopher Baker (Alana); great-grandchildren, Harper and Izzie Rainbow, and Jessi Bement, Jr.; brother, Wilbur (Wa) Baker (Angela); many nieces and nephews; as well as his wife, Michelle Baker.

A private graveside service will be held at South Hill Cemetery at the convenience of the family. In lieu of flowers, donations in Lyman’s memory may be made to the S.P.C.A.

Funeral arrangements have been entrusted to Bangs Funeral Home, Ithaca, NY. Online condolences may be made to Lyman’s family at www.bangsfuneralhome.com.
