Corbin, Luella "Lou" May Smith
Newfield: Luella "Lou" May Smith Corbin, 85, of Newfield, NY, went home to be with Jesus on March 26, 2013. She passed peacefully surrounded by her loving family. A native of Ithaca, Lou was born to her late parents, Ernest and Sadie (Bates) Smith on May 12, 1927. She married her beloved husband, Charles W. Corbin, on September 16, 1950.
She is survived by her devoted husband of 62 years as well as her loving daughter, Janet Marie Corbin (Scott) Petry and two adoring grandsons, Gregory and Matthew Petry, all of Ithaca; her sister, Naomi Niemi, formerly of Etna, NY, who now resides in Cantonment, FL; as well as several nieces and nephews. She is also survived by her son, Gary R. (Carrie) Corbin and granddaughter, Samantha Corbin. She was preceded in death by her brother, Ward Smith; and her sisters, Shirley Fox and Audrey Knapp.
Lou was an involved member of the First Presbyterian Church of Ithaca. She worked for many years at the Finger Lakes Library System and enjoyed volunteering at the Service League. She and Charlie were avid square dancers for many years. They always took great pleasure in attending all of their grandsons' school events; they could often be found in the Immaculate Conception School gym cheering on the ICS Blue Knights basketball team. Lou was a loving, devoted wife, mother, and grandmother. She was a precious, wonderful lady who was, by her very nature, always sweet, kind, and loving. She had a gentleness that animals seemed to gravitate toward. She will be dearly missed by all who knew her.
Friends may call on Wednesday, April 10, 2013, from 4-6 p.m. at Bangs Funeral Home in Ithaca. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in Lou's name to the Immaculate Conception Parish basketball program. A memorial service will be announced at a later date.
