Lorraine Miller Claypoole died on November 11, 2012, at Kendal at Ithaca at the age of 92. She was born in Detroit, Michigan, on January 20, 1920, to James Kenneth and Grace Bogardus Miller. She grew up in Dumont, New Jersey, and graduated from the New Jersey College for Women of Rutgers University. There she met James Claypoole, and they were married in 1943. They spent their first years of marriage in Florida, Texas, and California, where Lieutenant Claypoole was stationed with the Air Force. They settled in Metuchen, New Jersey, in 1946, where they raised two daughters. In the mid-50s Lorraine took graduate courses toward certification in education and taught high school home economics for a number of years. Upon her retirement, she enjoyed sewing, painting, volunteer work in the local hospital, bridge, and golf. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Jim, who died in 1989, and her daughter Janis Claypoole Coss, who died in 2001. She moved to Kendal at Ithaca in 2002 to be near her daughter Judy Stewart and her husband Jack. Her family will remember her as a loving mother and grandmother. Her friends at Kendal will remember her for her independence, spirit, and love for the game of bridge. In addition to Judy and Jack, she is survived by her former son-in-law, George Coss, and her grandchildren: Craig Stewart and his wife, Andrea, who live in South Hamilton, MA; Andrew Stewart and his wife, Stephanie, who live in Greenwood Village, CO, and Karin Coss Walsh and her husband, Robert, who live in East Windsor, NJ. Also surviving are her great-grandchildren: Jack, Drew, Riley, Tanner, and Carter Stewart and Nicholas, Jack, and Ryan Walsh. Respecting Lorraine's wishes, the family will gather privately at a later date to celebrate her life. Gifts in Lorraine's memory can be made to Hospicare, 172 East King Road, Ithaca, NY 14850, and to Kendal's Employee Appreciation Fund, Savage Farm Drive, Ithaca, NY 14850.
