Ljubica Heim (née Resanovic’) died peacefully on July 8 at Cayuga Medical Center after a years-long struggle with congestive heart failure. She was born on January 19, 1921 in Majske Poljane near Glina, Croatia, the eldest child of Milan Resanovic’ and Jelica Paspalj. Raised on a farm with five younger siblings, she gained a lifelong skill and interest in growing and gardening.
As ethnic Serbs living in Croatia, family members were lost to the cruelty inflicted during the early years of WWII. As the war swept into her area she left home to be a nurse’s aide and found herself posted at a hospital in Austria where she met an American GI radio specialist. She spoke no English and Kenneth Tennant spoke no Serb-Croatian. Nonetheless, they found a way to communicate and they were married in Austria. She became one of the early war brides, and journeyed to America when the war came to an end. Known to her friends as Luby or Violet, she went on to marry four times - outliving all her husbands. She lived in Lindenhurst, NY where she raised her family, Boynton Beach Florida where she lived with Carl Heim until his passing, and most recently Ithaca, NY to be near her son.
Luby lived to over 100 years old independently, keeping an apartment and doing all her own cooking. She made a mean sauerkraut and ribs, loved her vegetables well cooked, and her stuffed peppers and goulash were legend. Luby was a character who left an impression. She loved her hobby of making jewelry, often giving it away in to people in unexpected places. She will be missed by her family and friends.
She is survived by two sons (Donald Tennant and David Tennant), five grandchildren (Daniel Tennant, Elizabeth Tennant, Andrew Tennant, Deborah Brock, and Mark Tennant); eight great grandchildren (Douglas Brock, Daniel Brock, 2 Patrick Tennants, Cillian Tennant, Zachary Tennant, Theodore Taschereau and Alexandre Taschereau); one sister (Danica Miscevic); and four nieces (Roswitha Weidemann, Dusanka Cavic’, Nada Resanovic’ and Ljubica Trivkovic’). She is predeceased by her husband (Carl Heim); one sister (Dragica Finger); two brothers (Stevo Resanovic’ and Ljuban Resanovic’); and one half-brother (Dragan Resanovic’).
