Lewis "Lewie" James Mathews, Jr.

Lewis James Mathews, Jr. 71, of Newfield, passed away on November 15, 2024, at Cayuga Medical Center. Lewis was born on January 29, 1953, in Watkins Glen to Lewis and Virginia (Kanam) Mathews Sr.

Lewie was married on May 5, 1973, to Gay L. (Seeley) Mathews they were lucky enough to have 51 years together.

Lewie retired from Bishops Home Center as Hardware manager after 20 years. He was the bar manager at Captain Joe’s, among many other bar tending jobs throughout his lifetime. Lewie was a past member of the Ithaca Elks. One of his great pleasures was helping Joe Scaglione with the Ithaca fireworks. Anybody who knew Lewie knew he was always up for a party.

In addition to his wife Gay, Lewie is survived by his “devil dog” Riley; his special niece Melissa (Mathews) Williams; nephews Derrick Mathews, Steven Seeley, and Richie Seeley; cousins David Mathews and Sis (Mathews) Shoemaker. In addition to his parents Lewis was predeceased by his brother Jeff Mathews, and his “best beagle” Buddy.

A memorial service will be held on Saturday, November 23, 2024, at 3:00pm at Bangs Funeral Home. Donations in Lewis’s honor can be made to the SPCA of Tompkins County.
