Lewis H. Durland IV, Age 56, died unexpectedly in his sleep, on May 21, 2015, at his home in Ithaca. Left to mourn this delightful, dedicated, genial man are so many of us, especially his adoring wife, Chris Jolluck, his mother, Velma Durland, and his sister, Jan Durland King (Whitney). Lew was born and grew up in Rochester, and summers at his family cottage in the Finger Lakes. He graduated from Cornell University with a degree in Mechanical Engineering. He was a practicing LEED-accredited, licensed Professional Engineer, and Certified Energy Manager, in energy and sustainable design. For three decades he worked with many area companies, building a strong reputation and lifelong relationships with countless valued colleagues. Most recently he served as Director of Energy Management and Sustainability at Ithaca College, where he enjoyed applying not only his technical and analytical skills, but his passion and commitment to sustainability and protecting our planet. From developing the strategic plan for the college's energy future, to lecturing and interacting with students, he thoroughly enjoyed his role and his co-workers. Lew was committed to improving the world, both professionally and personally. He volunteered for various organizations including the Ithaca Energy Commission and Sustainable Tompkins. In 2011, he was named Outstanding Volunteer for the Upstate New York Chapter of the U.S. Green Building Council. A lifelong Grand Prix enthusiast, Lew created and facilitated the "Legends Speak" panel at the annual festival in Watkins Glen, as well as riding in the ADA Tour de Cure. He was well-known for lending a hand when needed. He loved cycling, skiing, hiking, and kayaking, as well as books, theater, his pets, nature, photography and music. Lew enjoyed a continual and diverse musical soundtrack to his life! He also loved children, and gathering with friends and family. He reveled in spending time at his family cottage on Seneca Lake. Lew will be remembered for his sweet and loving nature, his mischievous and quirky sense of humor, his passion and intellectual curiosity, and his beautiful smile and blue eyes. Lew will be deeply missed by nieces Sarah King (Mike Zimmer) and Carin Malley (Brian); nephew Benjamin Naimark Jolluck; his mother-in-law, Helen Jolluck; sisters-in-law, Barbara Chapin (Robert), Jeanne Jolluck, and Katherine Jolluck (Norman Naimark); and several aunts and cousins, including Amy Durland (Rob Mains) and Jack Durland (Debbie). He was predeceased by his father, C. Mortimer Durland. Bangs Funeral Home is assisting the family.
