Lawrence G. Saunders

Lawrence G. Saunders, 79, of Protts Hill Rd., Newfield, passed away on Wednesday, February 3, 2016 at his home. He was born in Canisteo, NY, son of the late Lawrence and Dorothy Saunders.

Lawrence was retired from Therm and had also worked as a truck driver for many years. Following his retirement he was able to return to farming full time which had been his passion all of his life. He was a member of American Legion Post 154 and VFW Post 6083 both of Elmira Heights.

Lawrence is survived by his daughters, Virginia (Michael) Maloney and JoAnn (Keith) Hoffman; his son, Jeffrey (Cindy Cain) Saunders; step-daughter, Debi (Donald) Swearingen; step-sons, James (Susan) Chaffee and Thomas (Debbie) Chaffee. He is also survived by his sisters, Viola, Geraldine and Elaine; his brothers, Dwayne and Francis and numerous grandchildren, great grandchildren, nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his wife, Shirley Saunders; his daughter, Jean Kelly; step-son Stephen Chaffee; brother, Lester Saunders and his sister, Edna Kinkennon and his children's mother, Cora Hayes Belles.

Funeral services will be celebrated by Pastor James Depue on Saturday, February 06, 2016 at 2 p.m. at the Bangs Funeral Home. The family will receive friends prior to the service beginning at 1 p.m. Burial in Woodlawn Cemetery, Newfield, will be delayed until spring. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Post 154 American Legion, 236 Scottwood Ave., Elmira Heights, NY 14903.
