Kenneth W. Haeling

November 14, 1931 — October 25, 2016

Kenneth William Haeling, 84, a life resident of the Owego Apalachin area, passed away
Tuesday morning, October 25, 2016. Ken was born in Callicoon, New York on November 14,
1931 to William and Ida Haeling. His distinct and contagious laugh, heart- felt values,
determination and hard work ethic, were just some of Ken's best known qualities.
At an early age, Ken was a go-getter. He grew up on the Flats in Owego, and "Once a Flat Rat,
Always a Flat Rat." After high school, Ken became a Marine and served his country during the
Korean Conflict where he earned the rank of Staff Sergeant. After the war, Ken returned to
Owego, earned his degree from Binghamton, and began his life career at IBM. In 1956, Ken
married the love of his life and high school sweetheart, Katherine Thomas. They began
embarking their dreams, starting a family, and building their dream home on the Susquehanna
River in Apalachin, largely built by Ken. Here they raised their two children, entertained friends,
hosted many parties for church friends, and family celebrations.
Upon his retirement, he dedicated his life to family and serving the church, St. Margaret Mary's.
He and Katherine were active in Criseo and Tioga County Rural Ministry among other
community assistance organizations.
Very near and dear to his heart were his grandchildren. He cherished their trips to Alexandria
Bay, where they would boat, laugh, and taught them how to fish. Ken's favorite hobby was
carpentry. He never stopped coming up with new ideas to build things, and clever ways to
express himself through wood. He was a trailblazer in organic gardening, upcycled antiques,
loved living on the Susquehanna River, being outdoors, trains, and had a deep compassion for
all in need.
Kenneth touched numerous lives. His presence in the world made it a better place, and his
legacy will endure for many. He is deeply loved.
Ken is survived by his son Karl (Elsa) of Briarcliff Manor, NY, Anne (Haeling- Bechert), his
daughter, his brother Warren (Fern) of Greensboro, North Carolina, and his four grandchildren:
Emma and Kyle Bechert and John and Joel Haeling. In heaven, Ken joined his wife Katherine,
his sister, Catherine (Miller) and his parents among many others.
A Celebration Mass of Ken's life will be held on Friday, November 4, at 10:30 am at St.
Margaret Mary's Church Apalachin. Family will receive friends prior to the mass at 10:00.
Immediately following the Mass, there will be a burial at St. Patrick's Cemetery in Owego.
