Kendrick Mason Howard, 86, passed away in his typical gentlemanly manner on January 12, 2019.
The only child of Kendrick Mason Howard and Juliamary Hastings Howard of Denver, he is survived by his loving wife, Jayne Rogers Howard of Ithaca, New York, his children Kendrick (Jenni) of Littleton, Colorado, Allison of Englewood, Colorado, and Elizabeth (Kyle) of Ithaca, New York and grandchildren Mason, Brewer and Duke.
Mason completed a BS from the University of Denver, and a medical degree and Orthopaedic Surgery residency from the University of Colorado . Although certainly a driven individual, his desire to create positive and lasting change for others was Mason’s overriding source of motivation. He had a busy orthopaedic practice in Englewood and Littleton, Colorado for 21 years. He served as President of the Arapahoe (CO) Medical Society, President of the Combined Medical Staff of Swedish Medical Center and Porter Memorial Hospital as well as other positions in the medical community. At Swedish he was a trustee for many years, as well as Board Chairman 1991-1993. He served as a trustee and chairman at HealthONE Alliance and was an HCA/HealthONE governor after the merger of several Denver area hospitals.
While state medical society president he foresaw a rising medical liability insurance crisis and partnered with others to found the COPIC Trust, COPIC Insurance Company and COPIC Medical Foundation. He remained founding Chairman and CEO of COPIC from 1984 through 2000, building a respected physician-owned liability carrier. He was honored by the Physician Insurance Association of American with its Peter Sweetland Award of Excellence.
It may appear the Mason was all work and no play, but he loved a good game of golf, a satisfying smoke on his pipe and a fine glass of red wine. Most importantly, he loved his family and making people laugh. He had a perpetual twinkle in his eye and often a sharp-witted comment on the tip of his tongue. For these qualities and many others, he will be fondly remembered and deeply missed.
Private services will be held. Those wishing to remember Mason are encouraged to donate to Learning Ally, an organization which records books for disabled learners, https://learningally.org/
