Ken passed away peacefully on June 9, 2021 after a long illness. He was residing at Groton Health Care Center where he received excellent compassionate care.
He is survived by his wife of 52 years, Hope Thorn Horst, his sons, Jeffery (Lianzi Yu), Bradley (Renee Merzejewski) and Timothy (Kristin Reece), daughter, Anne Horst (Anoly Turner), grandchildren, Madeline Turner, Brenden Yu Horst, Megan, Jason and Trevor many nephews and nieces, brother, Dick (Helen) Horst. He was predeceased by his first wife, Nancy (Vernon) Horst, his parents, Ralph (Florence Huff) Horst, brother, Donald (Marge) and sister, Grace (John) Lawrence.
Ken received his BS degree from Ohio University (57) and his MS and PhD from Ohio State University (62) in Plant Pathology. He began his career at Yoder Brothers, Barberton, OH as director of their disease control lab. In 1968 he accepted the position of Asst. Professor with the Department of Plant Pathology at Cornell University where he continued his research on the diseases of ornamental crops. After 30 years, Ken retired as Full Professor and started a private research company, H&I Agritech on a Grant by the Church & Dwight Company. He received many patents for organic disease control agents.
Ken was the Editor of four editions of the Plant Disease Handbook; author of 250 peer-reviewed scientific articles, four compendia, contributed several chapters to books by other authors and was a consultant nationally and internationally to commercial plant companies.
Arrangements are being handled by Bangs Funeral Home. Interment will be at Greensprings Natural Cemetery on July 1, 2021 at 11 am. The family will gather at Bangs Funeral Home at 10 am to process to the cemetery.
