John R. Sayles

John R. Sayles of Newfield passed away on Tuesday, May 30, 2023 at the age of 79.

John was born in Elmira, NY on September 1, 1943, a son of the late John F. and Ruth A. (nee Knapp) Sayles. He graduated from Newfield High School.  After graduating from Newfield High School he joined the Us Airforce from 1963 – 1967. He was Honorably discharged as a Jet Engine Mechanic with the rank of Sgt.

Worked at NCR,  a machinist at Almanco Inc. in Spencer, NY which was owned by his father, then self-employed cutting wood and hay until retiring in 2010.
He enjoyed camping, sailing, reading books, traveling with his family, and flying flight simulators.

John is survived by wife, Darlea (Morey) Sayles; son, Glenn Sayles; his siblings, Evelyn (Bernard) Hewitt, Carol Anderson, Barbara Murphy and Deborah Gellene; an aunt, Lucille (George) Sayles; many cousins, nieces, nephews, and friends were part of his life. In addition to his parents, John was preceded in death by his other son Kirk Sayles May 1990, his brothers, Donald Sayles in 2004 and Gordon Sayles March 2023.

The family will be present to receive friends and family on Tuesday, June 6, 2023 from 1:00pm to 2:00pm at Bangs Funeral Home, 209 W. Green Street, Ithaca, NY with a funeral service immediately following at the funeral home. A graveside service will be held on Friday, June 9, 2023 at 1:00pm at South Hill Cemetery, Coddington Road, Ithaca, NY.
