John N. Rantanen, Jr.

DANBY, N.Y. | John Nicholas Rantanen Jr., of Danby, passed away Aug. 4, 2015. Son of the late John Sr. and Elizabeth Rantanen, he was born March 14, 1937 in Sherwood, N.Y.

John is survived by his wife of 36 years, Marion Rantanen; daughter, Debra Rantanen (Andrew Knapp); three sons, John Rantanen III (Dawn Rantanen), David Rantanen II (Kathy Rantanen), and Steven Rantanen (Andrea Rantanen); step-children, Karen Matijas, Martin Matijas (Mary Jane Fanton), Audrey Matijas (David Brooks), and Eileen Deelstra (Ted Deelstra); sister, Joanne Balfour; brother, Edward Rantanen (Pat Rantanen); first wife of 15 years, Phyllis Bunker, and numerous nieces, nephews, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren.

John was predeceased by his brother, David Rantanen.

After graduating from Earlham College with a degree in agricultural economics, John farmed in Sherwood. Subsequently, he worked in construction for more than 30 years, retiring from Welliver McGuire as a vice president. John lived a full life dedicated to family and community. He was involved in Boy Scouts for a number of years; camping trips were his favorite. He also served as a trustee in the Chamber of Commerce. John was an active and devout member of the Church of Jesus Christ of the Latter Day Saints, where he taught youth and served as High Priest Group Leader. Golf and horseback riding were two of John's interests among many. Especially memorable to him were the wilderness pack trips he took with his family where he experienced the grandeur of the American West. Above all, John is remembered for his love and dedication to his family. He was a wonderful husband and father, and leaves a hole that cannot be filled in the hearts of many.

The funeral service will be held at 11 a.m. on Saturday, Aug. 8 with a reception to follow in the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints on Burleigh Drive, Ithaca. Calling hours begin at 10 a.m.
