Bird, John M. "Jack", age 85, passed away on April 27, 2017. Jack is survived by his wife of 34
years, Maura Weathers Bird, and his daughters, Anne Bird Sindermann (Maryland) and Marsha
Bird (San Francisco). He is also survived by his grandchildren, Andrew and Laura Sindermann,
and numerous in-laws, nieces, nephews and dear friends. Jack graduated from Union College in
1954 and then served in the US Army as a member of the Counter Intelligence Corps. He
received his PhD in geology from RPI. He was Professor of Geology at SUNY Albany and
Cornell University for 45 years before retiring in 2003. His field work in geology took him to
many parts of the world, including Newfoundland, Alaska, Siberia and Greenland. He was a true
outdoorsman who loved hunting, fishing and golfing. A memorial service is being planned for
later in the summer. Donations in Jack's memory can be made to the Department of Earth and
Atmospheric Sciences, Cornell University
