Joan (Roos) Egner

Joan Roos Egner, 93, of Ithaca, New York passed away on Thursday, February 2, 2023 at Cayuga Medical Center in Ithaca.  She was born November 30, 1929, in East Stroudsburg, Pennsylvania to the late John and Alice (Gilroy) Roos.

Joan is a graduate of East Stroudsburg University, where she received a Bachelor of Science degree in education. She began her teaching career as an elementary educator on Long Island, New York, and also taught and held administrative positions at public schools in Pennsylvania and Ohio.  She received her M.Ed. at The Pennsylvania State University and a Doctorate in Education from Cornell University.

At Cornell, Joan served as a Professor of Education in the College of Agriculture and Life Sciences and held various administrative positions in the College and at the University, including Associate Provost.  She retired from Cornell with Emerita status. She had a passion for teaching and found joy working with both undergraduate and graduate students as they pursued their degrees.

Joan was preceded in death by her husband of 61 years, Anton “Tony” Egner, who passed away on June 30, 2022.  She was also preceded by her sisters Kathryn Roos King and Alice Eklund.  Joan is survived by a brother-in-law, nine nieces and nephews, their spouses, and numerous great nieces and nephews.

Joan will be remembered as a strong woman, one who cared deeply for her family.

Friends will be received at 9:30 a.m. on Monday, February 6, 2023 at St. Catherine of Siena Catholic Church, 309 Siena Drive, Ithaca, New York.  Mass of Christian Burial will begin at 10:00 a.m. followed by internment at Calvary Cemetery, Ithaca, New York.
