Jeanne Shoemaker Corbit ,age 90, passed away on Tuesday, April 12th 2016 at her daughter's home in Danby, NY.
She was born in Corning, NY on January 3rd, 1926, the daughter of Raymond and Mary Bennett Shoemaker of Painted Post, NY. After graduating from Painted Post High School, Jeanne attended SUNY Fredonia and earned a B.S. in Music degree. Later she earned a degree for general classroom instruction and went on to teach music and general elementary classrooms for the Rushville and Ithaca City School District for many years. While she was in Rushville, NY, she met a kind, loving man named Lyle Corbit. They married, and eventually Lyle's work at High-Speed Checkweigher brought them to Ithaca.
Jeanne was an advocate for people with leaning disabilities and mental health issues. She supported the Racker Center, and was an influence in the creation of the independent adult living program. She was a long time member of St. Paul's United Methodist Church in Ithaca and was also a member of the New York State Retired Teacher's Association.
She loved her family cottage on Keuka Lake, and spent time every summer of her life there. It was a place where family and friends would come together. Jeanne was all about family.
Most of all Jeanne was a loving and supportive mother. She gave her children the kind of unconditional love that only a mother can. She was also a best friend. She will be deeply missed.
Jeanne was predeceased by her parents, her husband, and her sister Marian Meek of South Carolina. She is survived by he daughter Denise Beeners (Brian) of Danby, and her grandchildren Corinne and William, her son Gregory Corbit, and wonderful nieces, nephews, and cousins.
The family sends out a huge "Thank You" to all of the caregivers, Hospicare nurses and aids , and staff at CMA for their support.
In lui of flowers, donations can be made to The Fransziska Racker Center, Hospicare of Ithaca, or St. Paul's united Methodist Church in Jeanne's memory.
