Janice Dowd died on Saturday, August 18, 2012, at the Cayuga Medical Center. She was born on August 19, 1937 in Westfield, MA and grew up in Blandford, MA. Janice graduated from the University of Massachusetts and also attended Montclair State College in New Jersey and Binghamton University in New York. She was a high school math teacher for a total of 38 years in New Jersey, Massachusetts, and for 29 years at Binghamton High School. She met her husband, Robert W. Dowd, at a summer National Science Foundation Institute for math teachers and they were married in 1967. Janice enjoyed her math teaching career as well as working with students in the Computer Club at the high school. Bob and Janice moved to Kendal at Ithaca in 1996. Janice was an active volunteer in the Kendal library, helped establish the computer room, served as Chair of the Craft Room Committee, taught a weekly Drawing and Painting Class, and led the Kendal Chorus, which put on a number of musical performances, including "South Pacific" and "Oklahoma". Janice enjoyed reading, quilting, playing the piano, and walking on the Kendal paths. She and Bob owned a sailboat and liked to sail on Cayuga Lake. On windy days, Janice would often fly her kite on the Kendal green. Janice was predeceased by her husband, Bob, in 2009. She is survived by her brother, Roy Warfield of San Diego, CA. At her request, there will be no calling hours or service. A memorial reception at Kendal is planned for a later date. Persons wishing to remember Janice may make a contribution to the Rainy Day Fund at Kendal. Bangs Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements
