James Waring

December 13, 1942 — February 8, 2013

James Reid Waring Sr. 70, passed away peacefully on Friday February 8, 2013 at the Cayuga Medical Center, after 2 long stays at the hospital fighting complications from bile duct Cancer. Jay fought it to the very end.
Jay loved Ithaca so much, He always said it was the center of the Universe, he was well known and loved by many in Ithaca. He started his buisness here in 1976, Greentree Nursery on the old Elmira Road, with his wife Terry, 5 yr. old Loralee and 2 yr. old Reid.
The business started with a Christmas Shop, if your old enough to remember Jay as Santa, It was a happy place. For the first 5 years he sold plants and supplies, then moved over to where Kmart was. Of course not much was on Elmira Road in those days. He worked hard out of a Greenhouse for 5 yrs. until he was able to build a store. He sold lots of unusual Tropicals and did landscaping. Then around 1995 he was intriged with indoor gardening and Hydroponics ways of growing and started selling, with son Reid, Plant lighting and accessories.
After serving on the Ithaca School Board, he decided to go to Cornell for his Masters in teaching. He then Embarked on a new Career, Which he absolutely loved, Science Teacher. Jay poured his heart into everything he did and became odsessed. There wasn't any subject that ever came up that Jay Couldn't talk about Excessively, He listened sometimes, but mostly spoke. Everything excited him, he entertained everyone with his witt and humor. We thank everyone he's ever known, for their friendship and good thoughts, for making his life a happy one, Especially his son Reid, in Ithaca, daughters Loralee and her Husband Tom (who just gave him his 1st grandchild, little Max on Jan. 7) who was the highlight of his saty in the Hospital last week when he got to see him, they live in Virginia, He loved them all dearly.
He also leaves behind his wife of 44 years Theresa (Terry), Mother -In-Law Loretta, Sister Ellen, Sister-In-Law Diana, Brother-In-Laws, Frank and Cliff and Nieces and Nephews, Carl & Christa, Rob & Mia, Jessica & Ron, Clifton & Karina and Melissa aslo best friends Jerry and Barbara.
We will miss you terribly, your smile & laughter will be with us always. Like you always said "Its all about Jay"
A celebration of Jay's life will be held Thursday February 14, 2013 at 11:00 A.M. at Bangs Funeral Home with Rev. Timothy Dean Officiating. There are no calling hours, Burial will be private at a later date.
