Asay, Irene Furman

Irene Furman Asay, 89, longtime resident of Fall Creek, died Friday, February 15, 2013. She was born in Ithaca on March 18, 1923, daughter of the late Dana Clark Furman and Ella White Furman. Irene is survived by her husband of 50 years, Fred E. Asay, Jr.; her daughters, Cheryl (James) Potter and Linda Anderson; her grandchildren, Michelle (Charlie) Armstrong, Charles Timothy McCarthy and Mary L. McCarthy; and several nieces and nephews. In addition to her parents, she was also predeceased by her daughter, Patricia Bulger; grandson, Frederick E. McCarthy; and her siblings. Irene was retired from Hi-Speed Checkweigher's where she had worked for many years and was a member of the Professional Secretary's Association. She was an active longtime member of the Tabernacle Baptist Church where she had been the head of their social committee. Irene had given much to the community through her volunteering. She was a Cayuga Medical Center volunteer for over 20 years and had worked on bloodmobile's through R.S.V.P and volunteered at the GrassRoots Festival through her membership in the Trumansburg American Legion Auxiliary. Irene and Fred had traveled extensively with the Barbershop Singers (SPEBSQSA) through Fred's involvement. A celebration of Irene's life will be held on Wednesday, February 20, 2013, at the Tabernacle Baptist Church at 7 p.m. with refreshments and fellowship to follow. The family will receive friends prior to the services beginning at 6 p.m. In lieu of flowers, donations in Irene's memory may be made to the American Legion Post #770, 4431 Seneca Rd., Trumansburg, NY 14886 or to the Cayuga Medical Center Auxiliary, 101 Dates Dr., Ithaca, NY 14850. Arrangements are by the Bangs Funeral Home.
