Ira Brous

November 19, 1937 — March 23, 2024

Ithaca

Ira Brous 11/19/37-3/23/24.

Born in New York City to Martin and Riva but growing up on Long Island, Ira excelled at most all that he did. Following a stint at Cheshire Academy he attended Cornell University, graduating in 1959. After serving a few years in the Air Force he received his PhD at Syracuse University and soon thereafter moved to Ithaca to teach at Ithaca College where he remained for many years. His ability to both understand and teach economics was unparalleled, usually controversial and often highly entertaining. Eventually, he “retired” and with his entire family, went into business. Thus began a second career where he specialized in catering though he also dabbled in real estate. His energy, sense of humor and humanity helped to drive the business, eventually numbering five busy locations in Ithaca. He continued to work late in life, only stopping when Covid hit.

Preceded in death by his parents, brothers Barry and Eric and sister Susie, he is survived by the love of his life Anne, wife of 64 years, his sons Gregar (Vicki) and Ramsey (Melissa), his brother Nils, sisters Lisa, Penny, Jennifer and Amy, grandchildren Lindsey, Chelsea, Miles, Rachel, Jonah and Milo and his devoted dog Shanti. Family was always of the greatest importance with many memorable trips and celebrations too numerous to list.

As a Marxist, capitalist, Jew, sometimes Buddhist, follower of Sai Baba and self-styled collector of art, Ira read extensively and was always up for any conversation, willing to teach, learn, inspire, joke and even shock. Though not a musician himself, he was a lover of music which led to living with rock bands at times and attending many live shows over the years. While we will all miss him terribly, it is likely that wherever he is, he is tapping his foot to the beat, snapping his fingers and smiling.

Anne and family will be sitting shiva at her residence 6pm-8pm Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday (3/25-3/27). Calling hours will be at Bangs Funeral Home Wednesday March 27th 3-5PM. A celebration of life will be held at Ithaca Reform Temple (Tikkun V’or) on Wednesday 4/3 at 6PM.
