Howard Holland

Howard G. Holland (חיים בן יוסף הכהן), beloved husband, brother, father, grandfather and great-grandfather, passed away in comfort on June 5, 2022, at Cayuga Medical Center, with his daughter Liz and son-in-law Glenn by his side.

Howard was born in Newark, NJ on June 20, 1932, where he was raised by loving parents Dr. George Holland and Fay Waterman Holland Isaac (both dec.). After graduating from Weequahic High School, he attended college at the University of Alabama, where he participated in the ROTC program.

He served proudly in the US Air Force for 20 years as a decorated Major. He received the Distinguished Flying Cross, Air Force Aerial Achievement (6 OLC), and Joint Service Commendation, among other commendations, for his service in the Vietnam War. After retiring from active service, Howard had a long and happy career as a pilot; first as the head of Congoleum Corporation’s flight department from 1974 to 1980, and then for the World Bank under James D. Wolfensohn. He traveled the world, often accompanied by his wife and children. He flew many distinguished guests and accrued countless family-favorite stories along the way.

Howard’s greatest joy was his big and loving family, to whom he was affectionately known as Pop. He was married to his beloved wife, E. Ann Holland, for 63 years, and was immensely proud of his two children, Dr. George A. Holland (dec.) and Elizabeth Holland Allen. He is further survived by his brother, Richard Holland (Clare Rosoff Holland), daughter-in-law Laura Baum Holland, son-in-law Glenn Allen, grandchildren Joseph Holland, Emily Holland Carpino (Jesse Carpino), Sarah Holland, Miles Allen, and Nelle Allen, and great-grandson Jack George Carpino.

He was known throughout his life for his humor and his generosity. He kept the world laughing, family, friends, and strangers alike. He and his wife Ann opened their door to anyone in need and treated their many loving acquaintances like family. He inspired all with his optimism, wit, work ethic, charm, devotion to his wife, wisdom, storytelling, love of adventure, and selflessness.
