Helen S Engst died peacefully April 15. She was 96 years old. She is survived by her children Toni (Charles) Santmire, Dona Greene, Timothy (Joan) Engst, Nancy Engst, and Chris (Elaine) Engst. She has ten grandchildren and 19 great grandchildren. Helen graduated from Ithaca High School, received a BS in Home Economics from Cornell, and later an M.S. She served on the Class of 37 reunion committee for Cornell, and was head for the 50th reunion. Helen taught Home Economics at Dewitt Junior High School for 20 years. She was very active in the Ithaca community, joining the League of Women Voters, Dewitt Historical Society, the Ithaca Cooperative Consumers' Society, Common Cause, and, especially, FISH, both as a driver and as a telephoner. She was an active member of the Unitarian Church. She was instrumental in the formation of the U.S. China Friendship Committee. Helen will be remembered for her cheerfulness, helpfulness, and optimism by those who knew her. We would like to thank the staff of Clare Bridge and Oak Hill Manor for making her last years so enjoyable. Those who would like to do something in her memory could volunteer with the organization of their choice. There will be no service, as she wished. Bangs Funeral is assisting the family.
