Hans Wimpfheimer, loving husband of Marion, father of Peggy Galkowski and Brenda Cooper and her husband Mark Cooper and grandfather to David and Jeffrey Galkowski, and Elliot and Ethan Cooper passed away at Kendal at Ithaca on 4/29/2015. Hans was born on 4/2/1923 in Essen, Germany and escaped Nazi Germany, immigrating with his parents through Ellis Island at age 16. He attended trade school and worked as a typesetter from 1940-1943. In 1943 he enlisted in the United States Army where he served during World War II in India and the Far East. After his service in the army, he resumed his education and earned a Bachelor's Degree in Physics (magna cum laud) from City College of New York while supporting his family as a printer, and then obtained his Master's Degree in Solid State Physics from New York University in 1968. He was a Senior Engineer at IBM until his retirement at age 65 and was awarded 4 patents in semiconductor fabrication. He was an avid bicyclist until well into his 80's and loved computer technology. Graveside services will be held on Friday, May 1, 2015 at Lakeview Cemetery with Rabbi Scott Glass officiating. Donations in memory of Hans may be sent to public television/radio station WSKG, 601 Gates Road, Vestal, NY 13850. Bangs Funeral Home is assisting the family.
