H. Marjon van der Meulen
- - Marjon passed away peacefully on Saturday afternoon after enduring Alzheimer's disease. She is survived by her husband Yde, and their daughters, Marjolein and Sabine. She was loved and will be dearly missed.
Marjon was born in Batavia (Jakarta, Indonesia). The family evacuated in 1942 without her father, arriving in Australia as refugees. After the war, they moved to the Netherlands. As a student at Utrecht University, seeking help for a blown fuse led to a chance meeting with Yde, who became her husband of 55 years. In 1968 they moved to Los Angeles, later settling in Yorktown Heights, NY.
After studying art history in Utrecht, Marjon continued her doctoral research while raising her family. Her thesis, Petrvs Pavlvs Rvbens Antiqvarivs, received the Karel van Mander prize from the Dutch Society of Art Historians in 1975. Her research on Rubens culminated in Rubens Copies after the Antique, published in 1994 in the Corpus Rubenianum. Over time, Marjon applied her talent for archival research to her family genealogy.
Marjon was fair, kind and energetic in her undertakings. As a mother, she poured her heart and soul into raising her two daughters. Friendships were important to her, she maintained strong connections with her university friends, and developed deep US relationships. After Yde retired, they traveled extensively and moved to Ithaca, NY.
