ITHACA - Gregory Stanley Gizewski of Ithaca passed away unexpectedly on Friday, April 5, 2019. He was born in Chicago on July 13th 1961 to his parents Donna Day (Gizewski) and Stanley Gizewski. He had 3 he siblings he cherished, Mark, Stephen, Lori Ann, and Jon Paul. His family was loving and close, supporting and encouraging each other no matter distance or time. Greg attended school at Southern Illinois University where he studied journalism. Greg married his wife Barbara Paley Gizewski in Aurora, Illinois on August 15th 1999, and moved to Ithaca, where he embraced Barbara’s sons Crow Greenspun (Joby Greenspun), Juge Greenspun (Susan Perri), Cory Mason, Tam Mason, and Brody Paley. He and Barbara neighbored the kids and enjoyed years in the cabin on the beautiful hills of Ithaca. One of his greatest joys was being Grampy to his grandchildren Reuben, Hatteras, Boden, Luca, Charlotte, Nora, Mayzie, Isobel and Anna. He delighted in them and was patient and ready with special Grampy treats, rides on his chair, chess games (he never lost), and a stash of gum.
Greg’s career was work that provided service to his community in a variety of ways. He found great meaning in helping others. His final job was being a Children and Family Services Specialist in Syracuse, New York.
To describe Greg as exuberant and gregarious is an understatement, he had a quick infectious laugh like no other. Greg was an inspiring role model to many. Though he faced many barriers he remained positive, optimistic and relied on his deep Seventh Day Adventist faith. Greg was an Elder in his church providing sermons, guidance and inspiration. His exuberance modeled eternal life here, for all of us.
Greg loved kung fu movies, telling stories, and speeding. He leaves behind a large community of people whose lives he touched, and he will live on in the example he set for us all.
A funeral service will be held at 10 am on Tuesday, April 9, 2019 at Ithaca SDA Church, 1219 Trumansburg Rd. in Ithaca with Pastor Lenox Brown, officiating. Burial will follow in Budd Cemetery on Gray Road in the Town of Enfield.
